Virginia Beach Residents: Nearly All Water Service Line Materials Identified, No Lead Found So Far

Virginia Beach Public Utilities has identified the materials used in most of its water service lines. This work aims to protect public health and ensure safe drinking water. As of November 2025, about 99% of public and private water service lines in the city have been identified. This effort is part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR). The LCRR requires all U.S. water systems to inventory their service line materials to lower the risk of lead exposure.

No lead water service lines have been found in Virginia Beach so far. The city expects to finish identifying the remaining lines by the end of 2027. Until then, customers with unidentified service line materials will receive annual notices stating their line is ‘unknown, but may be lead,’ as required by the EPA.

Residents can check the material of their water service lines by searching their address on the city’s online inventory map. Those with verified non-lead lines will not receive further notifications. This process helps residents stay informed about their tap water…
