Des Moines woman charged with animal torture after dog found dead in suitcase

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines woman has been charged with animal torture after police say a dog was found dead and tied up in a suitcase at her home.

Back in October, court records say law enforcement officers responded to the home of 26-year-old Kyra Johnson in the 1900 block of 10th Street in Des Moines to investigate a report of “suspicious activity.”

During a search of the home, a criminal complaint states that officers discovered a suitcase in a shed on the property. Inside the suitcase, the complaint says officers found a deceased dog. Officers noted that the dog’s front paws were bound with tape, and a cord was wrapped around the dog’s neck.

According to court records, a second dog at the home was observed to be inside a kennel that had “excessive amounts of feces and urine.” Court records state that ownership of the dog was transferred to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

Johnson was arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail on Wednesday. She has been charged with animal torture – first offense and animal neglect with serious injury or death. She is being held on a $5,000 cash-only bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 22…
