BOTA closing will worsen air pollution in Juarez, Lower Valley

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – A Mexican industry group has filed an objection under U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement rules to the planned banning of commercial trucks at El Paso’s Bridge of the Americas border crossing.

The National Association of Mexican Importers and Exporters (ANIERM) alleges the United States has failed to analyze the environmental impact the closing will have not in neighborhoods near BOTA, but on the people living farther east, where most trucks are likely to head after the closing.

“The submission asserts that this decision […] will disproportionately increase cargo traffic and air pollution in the area south of the Zaragoza–Ysleta crossing, home to thousands of Mexican residents in the city of Juárez,” the Commission for Environmental Cooperation said in a statement issued on Dec. 9…
