Letters: Illegal immigration entails many actions that cause harm to society

New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick is not exactly correct, stating that being illegal is not criminal. Use of the term, illegal immigrant, does not mean the person is illegal — it means a person’s status is illegal. Although having an illegal presence in the U.S. is not a crime, there is a crime in how that illegal presence came about. If a foreign national enters the U.S. illegally, bypasses inspection points, uses false government identity documents, has no visa or obtains any type of visa with the express purpose of using it to permanently remain in the U.S., both a criminal and civil violation occur. Reentering the U.S. after having been deported is a felony.
