On December 10, 2025, fire crews from Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands completed pile burning on the Sulphur unit in the Sandia Ranger District. The operation near Albuquerque, New Mexico, burned slash and woody debris left from earlier forest restoration. Crews will continue to monitor and mop up the area until it is fully out. Recreation access to the Sulphur area may stay closed for public safety during this time.
Residents in Albuquerque, Tijeras, Edgewood, and Moriarty may see smoke from the burn. Fire managers used recent precipitation, snow, and cooler temperatures to create safe conditions.
