4 people indicted on SNAP, welfare fraud charges in DeSoto Co., DA says

HERNANDO, Miss. (WMC) – Four DeSoto County residents have been indicted by a Grand Jury for allegedly defrauding the State of Mississippi out of more than $96,993.40 in public assistance funds, according to District Attorney Matthew Barton.

According to court documents and statements from the District Attorney’s Office, the alleged fraud involved the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other welfare programs. The offenses are said to have occurred between 2020 and 2025.

Two of the defendants, Kayla Smith and Sharita Jones, were arrested by the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office on December 11.
