Gov. Ivey awards $3.8M to aid low-income residents with energy bills

Gov. Kay Ivey has announced the allocation of over $3.8 million to assist low-income residents in Alabama with reducing their home energy bills. The funds, distributed through the Alabama Weatherization Assistance Program, are aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency and safety of homes selected for assistance. Thirteen grants have been awarded to community action agencies across the state.

Priority for the program is given to individuals with disabilities, the elderly, and low-income households with children. “Low-income families often have to choose between keeping their homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer over providing other basic necessities like food and medicine,” Gov. Ivey said. “These grants will help low-income households make beneficial upgrades that can significantly reduce their heating and cooling bills.”

Each home that qualifies for the program will undergo an energy audit to determine the most effective weatherization methods, such as adding attic insulation or sealing air leaks around windows and doors.
