86-year-old driver who ignored red light arrested at Southern Trace Plaza

An 86-year-old Oxford man who ignored a red light was arrested near Southern Trace Plaza in The Villages.

A deputy observed 86-year-old James Robert Chapman driving a gold Pontiac eastbound on County Road 466 in The Villages at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

As they approached the intersection near Southern Trace Plaza, Chapman suddenly made an improper lane change from the far right to the far left lane. He then entered the intersection with the intention to make a left turn. The report noted the left turn traffic light was red, which he ignored.

The Pontiac subsequently sat in the middle of the intersection, waiting to make the left turn. However, the parallel traffic lights for north and southbound traffic turned green, meaning he now blocked the road and any vehicles traveling through the intersection. He stayed there for a light cycle before the deputy turned on his emergency lights for a traffic stop, the report said…
