Maryland Zoo celebrates arrival of 8 baby African penguins, aiding population boost

BALTIMORE, Md. (DC News Now) — The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore welcomed eight baby African penguins to its family, growing the population of the birds in North America.

The critically endangered penguins’ breeding season begins in mid-September and lasts until the end of February at the zoo. The season mirrors the spring-to-summer breeding season for the birds in their native South Africa and Namibia.

Staying true to an annual tradition, Maryland zookeepers selected a theme for the chicks’ names – fruits and vegetables. On Monday, the zoo announced the first two names of the baby African penguins: Kiwi and Cayenne.
