Homeless Vietnam veteran honored with dignified funeral

AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF)- Friday, a local homeless Vietnam veteran was laid to rest after being killed in an accident in October.

67-year-old Lester Padgett Jr. died on October 7 after being hit by a car. He didn’t have any living family and faced a pauper’s burial, until a friend decided that as a veteran, he deserved a proper and dignified funeral.

“We met in 2018 during my stint with a nonprofit in Aiken, and he would come to the shelter and stay or get food from the soup kitchen. And we would just spark up conversation, talk about how he was doing, different things like that,” said April Tiller…
