TOLEDO, Ohio — The man accused of killing and dismembering 27-year-old Malicai Calder in Toledo is set for a competency hearing next month as his defense explores the possibility of a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.
Martel Huggins, 32, was arraigned in Lucas County Common Pleas Court on Friday, where he pleaded not guilty to all counts against him. Judge Joe McNamara set his bond at $2 million. A competency evaluation and a not guilty by reason of insanity evaluation are set for Jan. 16.
Calder was reported missing on Nov. 22 and was last seen on Nov. 15, according to Toledo police. Ten days after he was last seen, officers stopped Calder’s work vehicle on the 3000 block of Mulberry Street and found Huggins behind the wheel…
