El Paso County Commissioners Court addresses service disruptions at Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso County Commissioners Court addressed the continued disruptions at the El Paso County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office on Thursday, Dec. 11, including delays in dealer transactions, title and registration processing, and office closures that are impacting the public’s ability to complete tasks such as vehicle registration and property tax payments.

County tax office closes Westside location for ‘reorganization’

The Commissioners Court says the issues stem from the implementation of House Bill 718, which took effect in July, including the mandatory conversion to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles’ WebDealer system for all vehicle title and registration transactions.

“While many counties transitioned smoothly after the two-year implementation window, the El Paso Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office has faced ongoing challenges that resulted in a backlog of more than 5,600 dealer transactions and reduced public access to services,” the Commissioners Court said.

The Commissioners Court also says that it does not oversee or manage the day-to-day operations of the Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office, including the recent closure of the Westside tax office, and that due to budget constraints, the County has not accepted department requests for staffing in the last two years…
