NEW MEXICO (KRQE) — A specialized group of advocates updated lawmakers on its plan to prevent violence against indigenous people. The Missing and Murdered Indigenous People’s Task Force works to curb the high number of murders and disappearances through a state response plan.

The plan is multi-layered using input from both the victims and advocates. “Advocating for victims as family hits you hard, especially when you have gone through it yourself and you want to fight for their lives,” said Missing & Murdered Indigenous Peoples’ New Mexico Advocate Kimberly Wahpepah. “It has to stop. I’m sick of saying we have the highest rate in New Mexico. I’m sick of how many people are going missing and no one’s not doing anything about it.”
