Grandma gets up to 4 years for role in confining grandson in small room in Storey County

A Nevada grandmother was sentenced Friday to up to four years behind bars for helping keep her then-14-year-old grandson locked in a small room for roughly a year and a half, a case that drew widespread attention after authorities discovered the teen malnourished and living in what deputies described as extremely poor conditions.

Nancy Hinds, 68, admitted to assisting her daughter, Tammy Hinds, in confining the boy inside a small space above the garage of their Gold Hill home. Deputies found the teen in May 2024 during a welfare check sparked by a concerned citizen. Investigators reported that the room had no bathroom, that the boy relied on a bucket for waste, and that the space carried strong odors of urine and excrement. Authorities later determined the door was kept locked for as many as 23 hours a day.

Nancy’s sentencing follows the earlier punishment handed down to her daughter. Tammy, now 34, pleaded guilty in Storey County District Court to being a principal to child neglect. In court she acknowledged she had “failed as a parent,” and she was sentenced to two to five years in prison for her role in keeping her son confined and malnourished…
