Geminid meteor shower to dazzle with shooting stars

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A meteor shower is taking place this weekend that many astronomers said will be the best of the year. It’s called a Geminid meteor shower, and experts said, if skies are clear, stargazers may begin to spot the shooting stars as early as 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13.

The meteors are known to contain fireballs with flashes of green or red caused by the same atmospheric gases behind the Northern Lights. Richard Monda, a physics and astronomy assistance professor at Hudson Valley Community College, shared what you can do to catch the best show.

“You just need to go outside to a clear sky and dark sky and set your gaze towards the east, northeastern part of the sky as Gemini rises and just watch for those meteors. Just be patient.”

The professor added that you may not see one every few seconds, but if the skies are clear, you can count on one at least every five minutes. He said it’s happening on Saturday and Sunday…
