Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas plan changes to SNAP purchases

JOPLIN, Mo. (KOAM) — Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas are among a growing number of states moving to restrict what foods can be purchased with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, part of a broader effort supporters say is aimed at improving public health.

According to the most recent data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, nearly 1.8 million people across the Four States rely on SNAP to help afford groceries.

For years, one of the most debated aspects of the program has been whether benefits should be used to purchase items such as soda and candy.
