FRESNO, Calif. (KGPE) – The Geminid Meteor Shower peaks each December, and it provides stargazers with fast streaks of light across the night sky.
The peak of the meteor shower will be Saturday night until dawn on Sunday morning. With perfect conditions, up to 150 meteors per hour are possible. It’s tough to find those perfect conditions, but if you can get away from city lights and find a wide open view, up to 40-50 meteors might be possible to see each hour.
This year, the Central Valley has a stubborn cloud cover in place, which will limit visibility for the meteor shower. Most Valley locations will not be in a good position to watch the show, but the good news is that you can take a drive to get out of the clouds.
The higher elevations above the clouds and fog will have a clear sky. If you head for the hills, stay away from lights, have blankets and snacks ready, and allow your eyes time to adjust to the dark.
