WEST PALM BEACH – Medical mistakes can have profound and lasting impacts on patients and their families. In Florida alone during 2023, there were 104 approved insurance rate filings related to healthcare incidents. In the same year, 3,651 professional liability claims were closed, reflecting the ongoing challenges patients face when navigating medical errors. Claims were nearly evenly split between female and male patients, with 1,830 women and 1,821 men affected. Hospitals, particularly inpatient facilities, were the locations most frequently cited in these claims, and many of the cases were classified as moderate or severe in terms of the harm caused. These numbers highlight how widespread and serious medical mistakes can be across the state.
