Police Release Video of Shooting Suspect on the Loose

Additional Coverage:

Providence, RI – Local authorities have released security footage showing the suspect in the recent Brown University shooting incident leaving the Barus & Holley engineering building. The video, made public Saturday evening, depicts a man in dark clothing, believed to be the individual responsible for the tragic event.

Police previously stated their belief that a man dressed in black opened fire in a classroom at the Ivy League institution, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals and critically wounding at least eight others.

The security camera footage, captured from the building with a view of Hope Street, shows the suspect as he is thought to have fled the scene. While the man’s face is not visible in the short clip, he appears to be wearing what authorities suspect could be a camouflage face mask, though this detail remains unconfirmed. He is seen wearing a black beanie and dark clothing as he walks around a corner.

Investigators believe the suspect used a handgun, but no weapon is visible in the released footage. This detail, along with the type of weapon, is still awaiting confirmation. However, shell casings have been recovered by law enforcement and are currently undergoing identification.

Authorities initially suggested the suspect may be in his 30s, but they have emphasized that they are “not positive” about this age estimate.

Over 400 officers are actively involved in searching the university campus and the surrounding affluent neighborhood for the suspect, who remains at large, and for any evidence that could lead to an arrest.

A shelter-in-place order for the area remains in effect, although officials have indicated their belief that the threat is contained to the campus and its immediate vicinity.

Of the initial eight injured victims, one remains in critical condition, while six others are described as critical but stable. The eighth victim is reported to be in stable condition.

A ninth victim was identified during a sweep of the lab building where the shooting occurred in a first-floor classroom. This individual later discovered they had been injured by shrapnel from either the bullet or an object the bullet struck.

“The individual learned that they had received fragments from the shooting that occurred near them,” officials stated.

The gunman was last observed shortly after 4 p.m., coinciding with the initial emergency call reporting the incident. It is alleged that he entered the building after hours, potentially by using a swipe card function, which would imply access to a student or faculty ID. Alternatively, he may have been granted entry by others within the building, as officials noted it was an area of high traffic due to ongoing final exams.

“Most of our buildings, after hours, are card swipe,” officials explained. “But since there was a final exam, there was probably a lot of traffic in there.”

The identities of the victims have not yet been released. The university, in conjunction with law enforcement and hospital personnel, is working to identify those affected.

A statement from Brown University addressed the community’s concerns: “We know there is a lot of fear and concern and uncertainty in the community right now. Law enforcement is actively working to identify the deceased victims, and the hospital personnel also are working to identify those transported to the hospital.”

The statement continued, “As a reminder, please continue to take all steps to remain safe. Follow the instructions of law enforcement personnel and avoid the area. The safety of our community is foremost.”

The university also urged, “Any students or Brown community members who were in Barus & Holley at the time of the incident are being asked to contact police if they already have left Barus & Holley.”
