Himalayan Kitchen allowed to reopen following food safety violations

HONOLULU — Himalayan Kitchen has reopened its doors after correcting multiple food safety violations that prompted a health‑department shutdown earlier this week, officials announced Friday.

The popular Indian and Nepalese restaurant at 1137 11th Ave., Suite 205 in Kaimuki was ordered closed Dec. 9 after a routine Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) inspection uncovered serious problems, including insufficient refrigeration for temperature‑sensitive foods and evidence of rodents and insects in the kitchen, according to state health records.

During that inspection, DOH food safety specialists documented a list of critical violations — from broken cold‑holding units and food in poor condition, including moldy items, to improper date marking, toxic materials stored above single‑use food containers, unprotected openings that could allow pests entry, and sightings of a live rat and live cockroaches in the kitchen area…
