CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Tribute murals honoring Iryna Zarutska, the 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who was fatally stabbed on the Charlotte light rail on Aug. 22, are now appearing in cities across the United States.
The project began after Intercom CEO Eoghan McCabe pledged $500,000 in grants to artists willing to paint murals of Zarutska in prominent locations. On Dec. 8, McCabe announced that the first mural had been completed in Venice, California.

The effort has since grown, thanks in part to Elon Musk, who added $1 million to support the initiative.
Several locations have been confirmed, including California, Florida, and Washington, D.C. More murals are expected to appear, serving as a public tribute to Zarutska’s life.
