Portland Fire and Rescue hosts ‘Safety Santa’ at historic firehouse

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Jolly Old Saint Nick took a break from his usual Christmas preparations at the North Pole to meet with kids at the Belmont Firehouse in Southeast Portland.

This Saturday, kids were invited by Portland Fire and Rescue to meet and take pictures with “Safety Santa” as he shared some helpful fire safety tips.

One in particular involves some of those presents under the tree which may be battery-powered.

“We do talk a lot about winter safety topics,” said Kim Kosmas with PF&R. “A lot of them are based on lithium ion battery safety. That’s a big new one for us. Heating safety is another one, and candle safety is another one that we focus on with a lot of the families.”

Another safety tip suggests unplugging the lights on your tree overnight, especially if you have a real one. When those trees dry out, officials say those lights can and do cause fires. Also make sure any lit candles are extinguished…
