Report Shows Young Adults in New York Struggling with Affordability Challenges

A new report finds that New York’s young adults are facing a complex economic landscape that threatens their financial well-being. According to State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, that landscape includes higher unemployment rates, increasing costs, and larger debt burdens. Statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey show that in 2023, the state’s population consisted of 4.6 million young adults ages 18-34. That marks a 1.9% decline in that age group’s population in New York over the past decade, while the national population of young adults increased by 4.2%. In Western New York, the young adult population was about 314,200 in 2023, which is 2.5% less compared to 2013.
