DES MOINES, Iowa — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a man was found dead late Sunday night in a homeless encampment in a wooded area on the north side of Des Moines.
Lt. Mark Chance, Public Information Officer for the sheriff’s office, said the man’s death was likely caused by cold-weather exposure, but an autopsy is being performed to confirm the cause of death.

Officers with the Des Moines Police Department were initially called to the camp’s location, about a mile north of Polk County River Place, just before 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. The area is between the Trestle Trail and the Des Moines River.
