Frost Road Trail Project gets green light to extend 2 miles east

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A high-profile trail in the East Mountains now has the green light for construction to begin next year. The Frost Road Trail Project will connect an existing paved trail nearly two miles east for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Frost Road Trail in the East Mountains begins at the San Antonito traffic circle and ends at Candy Court. Bernalillo County Commissioners say they are excited about the approved extension to continue the trail, especially as the area has grown.

“The trail runs along Frost Road which is a really populated area; it just ends right here,” Bernalillo County District 5 Commissioner Eric Olivas said. “You can see behind me the end of the trail.”

Commissioner Olivas says this abrupt ending leaves people who want to enjoy the trail to either turn around or continue onto a high-speed road, posing a safety risk. “Safety out here is a big concern,” Olivas said. “We get a lot of complaints about speeding on this road, close calls. It’s really dangerous for anybody to be walking or recreating on this road. It’s really meant for cars. So this gets people to a safe place.”…
