Russell County jury acquits man on capital murder charges, finds him guilty of manslaughter for 2019 arson deaths

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (WRBL) — It took a Russell County Circuit Court jury seven hours of deliberations over two days to find a man guilty in the 2019 arson deaths of an elderly Phenix City couple.

Ricky Mack Morris was convicted Monday morning on two counts of manslaughter in the deaths of Abner Garnto, 80, and his wife, Martha, 79.

The jury found Morris not guilty on three capital murder charges but convicted him on the lesser charge of manslaughter. He was also found not guilty on one manslaughter count that included both deaths by arson…
