AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Plant it in the winter and harvest it in the late spring. The winter wheat crop is off to a so-so start in the Texas Panhandle, but for one Amarillo resident, Christmas came early as Dr. Jackie Rudd received a prestigious award in the Ag Industry (Texas Wheat Legacy Award), recognized for all she contributed when it comes to wheat and wheat varieties.
“Pretty humbling you have all the wheat producers in Texas who the board represents, and that’s just where my career has been serving the producers of Texas, putting in new varieties, working with them, talking to them individually,” said Dr. Rudd, wheat breeder.
“So, Dr. Jackie Rudd is one of our statewide wheat breeders, and he’s been breeding wheat varieties that perform better in dry conditions or have a specific pest resistance that’s a major problem,” said Steelee Fischbacher, executive director Texas Wheat Producers Board. “He has bread high-performing lines that farmers can rely on from year to year to help them face the significant challenges that we have in our growing area.”…
