MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – We’ve told the stories of those impacted by the deadly school shooting at ALCS on December 16, 2024 over the course of this year. I’ve had the privilege of getting to know the families of the two students who were critically injured on that day.
Samy: slow but steady progress
I spoke with Samy’s mom, Gabi Martinez, on Friday. She says they are still at the rehab hospital in Chicago, and the days are very busy. But she happily reports Samy is making slow but steady progress.

Gabi says they can converse, and she is thrilled to see his personality coming out again.
“You can have a conversation with him, and [he has a] clear understanding [of] what’s going on around him, so he is with us. I always knew he was with us, but now I can tell people, I told you!” says Gabi through laughter.
Samy can also now eat soft, pureed foods again. They are working very hard on his mobility. While his right side is strong; his left is not strong. He also struggles to sleep at night…
