Charleston man accused of filing insurance claim for stay at nonexistent home

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — A Charleston man is now facing a pair of charges because of a 2023 insurance claim that investigators say was false.

The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division says Stephen Andrew Adams, 40, of Charleston, is charged with forgery worth less than $10,000 and presenting a false claim for an insurance payment in an amount more than $2,000 but less than $10,000.

In two affidavits, agents say Adams submitted documents which were “fictitious” and filed a false claim with the USAA Casualty Insurance Company.

Agents report that Adams told the insurance company that he was renovating a covered property and that said renovations had rendered his home uninhabitable…
