Albuquerque city councilor aims to pass renters rights supplement to state senate bill

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A city councilor is trying to pass an ordinance similar to the Renter’s Empowerment and Neighborhood Transparency Ordinance that was voted against back in June. But this time around it’s simpler.

The bill is a supplement to a larger state senate bill, and it would make it mandatory for landlords to offer renters at least one fee-free payment option. Councilor Nichole Rogers said she’s heard from the community that in poverty, a $50 added fee makes a big difference.

“Poverty is a big part of why we’re doing this,” Albuquerque District 6 City Councilor Nichole Rogers said. “Any way to lower costs for working families and make things more affordable.”…
