Local Chanukah celebration follows deadly shooting in Australia

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — The Revere Road Synagogue along with Jewish Akron will share the holiday of Chanukah with the entire community Tuesday evening.

The festival of lights celebration will be held at the Summit Mall for the 35th year sharing traditional foods, songs, a menorah made of canned goods that will be donated to the Akron-Canton food bank afterwards and a seven foot tall menorah made out of Legos.

“The whole purpose of the holiday is to share how we have to increase in light and we have to add more goodness into the world in a world that’s filled with a lot of darkness,” said Rabbi Moshe Sasonkin, whose father started the tradition he now continues.

“The idea of doing it at the mall was really in line with the whole purpose of this holiday because one of the customs of this holiday for the Jewish community is not just to celebrate it at home but to share the light into the street, to shine that light to be a beacon of light,” said Sasonkin…
