Charlottesville community gathers for Hanukkah menorah lighting

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A community menorah lighting began Tuesday, December 16 evening on the Downtown Mall, with the mayor, city council members and families gathering to continue the Hanukkah holiday.

The event, hosted by Chabad of Charlottesville, featured a nine-foot menorah being lit near the Paramount Theater. The celebration included Jewish cuisine and dreidels, with council members and the mayor in attendance.

Organizers said gatherings like this matter, especially after a mass attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. Police and private security were on hand out of caution, but the focus remained on community and showing support for one another…
