The family of a Cathedral City man shot and killed by a Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy has been awarded millions of dollars following a federal civil trial, according to attorneys representing the family.A jury ruled in favor of the parents of Jeffrey Alexander Monroy, finding that Riverside County used excessive force during the incident. Family attorneys say the verdict is the largest excessive-force judgment ever returned against Riverside County.The shooting occurred in August 2020 while Monroy was working for his father’s pool service in Rancho Mirage. Court records show Monroe was struggling with mental illness at the time. He reportedly became agitated and walked away from the job site.Deputies responded after a neighbor reported suspicious activity. During a confrontation, authorities say Monroy stabbed a deputy with a screwdriver.
