Hillsboro Unveils New Flag Symbolizing Community Unity and Cultural Heritage After Engaged Citizen Vote

The city of Hillsboro has chosen a new flag, a symbol of community unity and pride in its cultural roots and forward-thinking ethos. Garnering 2,944 votes out of 4,200 cast on Engage Hillsboro this fall, the flag features four green panels, evoking Hillsboro’s agricultural heritage; a marigold circle, symbolizing historical connection; a blue circle for unity; and a Trillium flower, honoring the region’s Indigenous legacy and the city’s commitment to harmony.

Inspired by a drive to capture the spirit of Hillsboro, the city invited community members to share their stories and values for the flag design through an August survey. The 2025 Civic Leadership Academy, armed with these insights and backed by City graphic designer Jenny Granillo Martinez Beltran, created three flag design finalists that stood testament to four key themes–community, nature, history, and technology. Having received support from Beltran, the Academy conducted hundreds of interviews with community stakeholders.
