Bishop Lawrence Perisco of the Erie Catholic Diocese turned 75 in November, which means it’s time to start thinking about retirement.
According to church law, a bishop must write a letter of resignation to the pope once he turns 75 to retire.
Bishop Perisco has done that and now he must wait until the pope accepts his resignation.
He will stay on until a new bishop is appointed. This process includes bishops submitting candidates, voting on the top candidates and the pope making a final decision. It’s a process that can take months to complete…
