Police responding to a break-in at an apartment building in the San Fernando Valley early Tuesday opened fire on a man who they say was armed with a metal pipe.
The incident was reported shortly after 2 a.m. when the suspect broke into a unit on the 20300 block of Saticoy Street in Winnetka, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Arriving officers encountered the suspect and ordered him to drop what was described as a metal pipe, police told KTLA’s Carlos Herrera. The suspect did not comply, prompting officers to deploy a Taser, which was ineffective. A physical struggle followed as officers tried to detain the man, at which point an officer-involved shooting occurred.
