Mobile targets two dilapidated apartment complexes

MOBILE, Ala. (NBC 15) — Graffiti covered buildings with shattered windows and doors busted wide open fill what was the Berkshire Arms apartment complex near Azalea Road and Pleasant Valley Road. The office is closed, and no one lives there anymore. Two of the buildings are heavily damaged from fire. Neighbors have complained about rodents, litter and tire dumping. Mobile’s Director of Municipal Enforcement David Daughenbaugh says right now there’s a contractor cutting the grass and removing trash and debris on the site. Next, the city plans to demolish the fire-damaged buildings.

“That is processing now, as we speak. This week, we’ll have on site mandatory bids for the contractors, and then shortly after that, we expect to execute the lowest bid of the contract. So, we can begin that sometime in January for the demolition of the structures,” said Daughenbaugh.

Daughenbaugh says that the city will request bids at the first of the year to properly secure the remaining buildings. It’s not the only problem complex we’ve reported on in recent years. Down the road, residents battled rats and rubbish at Azalea Pointe Apartments. What few tenants remained there this summer went days without running water. Daughenbaugh says the city is starting the process in environmental court to get the owner to secure those buildings…
