Iowa marks four years since historic December derecho and record-breaking tornado outbreak

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Monday marks four years since the record-breaking derecho swept across Iowa in December 2021.

On Dec. 15, 2021, a line of severe storms produced destructive winds and dozens of tornadoes in what became the first and only derecho on record in the United States during the month of December.

The system also set a statewide tornado record. Iowa saw 63 tornadoes that day, the most ever recorded in a single 24-hour period. Of those, 21 were rated EF2 or stronger — also the most of that intensity recorded in Iowa in a single day…
