JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The Mississippi Court of Appeals affirmed the convictions and sentences of a man, who was convicted of killing a man in Jackson.
According to court documents, DeVon Odom was convicted of first-degree murder and armed robbery following a jury trial in March 2023.

In his appeal, Odom said the jury was not properly instructed concerning the issue of self-defense and that the evidence was insufficient to support his conviction for armed robbery. However, the court ruled that they found no reversible error and affirmed his convictions and sentences.

Jackson police said Odom shot Dontavius Tyrell Cooper during a gathering at the home of Odom’s girlfriend on Wacaster Street on October 24, 2019. They said Odom held his girlfriend and the victim’s brother at gunpoint and robbed them of their phones to prevent them from calling police.
Investigators said Odom fled the scene, and Cooper was taken to a local hospital where he died. Odom was later arrested.
