Local girl, 10, shoots 100-lb. doe during hunt with dad near Pitkin

There’s a 10-year-old New Iberia girl who makes and sells polymer clay earrings, a hobby turned into a craft, and following a memorable afternoon moment the first week of December, her father had a suggestion for the young entrepreneur.

Justin Melancon of Maurice has been telling Stella Melancon she ought to make a deer earring, a tribute to when she harvested her first deer Dec. 6 while hunting with him on a 3,200-acre piney woods lease in Vernon Parish. The doe she brought down weighed 100 pounds.
