Numerous Oregon mountain highways closed by powerful windstorm

A powerful windstorm in the early morning of Dec. 17 knocked down countless trees and power lines and has resulted in the closure of major Oregon highways, mainly in the Cascade Mountains east of the Willamette Valley.

“Drivers should use extra caution if they need to travel and check TripCheck.com before hitting the road to make sure their route is clear,” the Oregon Department of Transportation said in a news release.

Oregon highway closures

  • Oregon Highway 22, east of Salem, has reopened into Santiam Pass.
  • U.S. Highway 26, east of Portland, has reopened up into the Mount Hood area.
  • OR 126 is closed starting five miles east of Vida between mileposts 26 and 44 due to downed power lines and trees.
  • U.S. 20 is closed near Sweet Home at Shea Viewpoint between mileposts 51 and 71 due to downed trees and high winds.
