Report reveals search timeline for Lubbock couple found dead in New Mexico

LUBBOCK, Texas — An incident report from the Quay County Sheriff’s Office revealed more details about the timeline of the search for Gary and Linda Lightfoot, the Lubbock couple who went missing and was found dead in New Mexico.

Gary, 82, and Linda, 81, were last seen alive leaving a Thanksgiving celebration in Panhandle Texas on November 27. The couple was supposed to go home to Lubbock and never made it. A Silver Alert was issued on November 29. The Lightfoots were later found dead on December 2 in their disabled vehicle on ranch land west of Tucumcari.

The report released on Wednesday provided the following timeline of travel for the Lightfoots:

  • On November 27 at 3:00 p.m., the Lightfoots departed Panhandle.
  • On November 27 at 6:20 p.m., a license plate reader noted the vehicle traveling eastbound on I-40 in Amarillo.
  • On November 27 at 6:55 p.m., a license plate reader spotted the vehicle on Front Street in Groom, Texas.
  • On November 27 at 7:03 p.m., there was a second hit on the license plate on Front Street in Groom.
  • On November 27 at 8:36 p.m., a license plate reader spotted the vehicle on I-40 westbound near San Jon, New Mexico.
  • On November 27 at 9:05 p.m., law enforcement in Santa Rosa made contact with the Lightfoots and provided directions back to Lubbock.
  • On November 28 at 1:02 a.m., a license plate reader noted the vehicle in Santa Rosa, New Mexico.
  • On November 28 at 3:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., there was cellular activity detected from the vehicle by a tower near the Palomas exit of I-40, west of Tucumcari.

On December 2 at 10:28 a.m. Mountain Time, authorities were dispatched to a sighting of a silver vehicle on T4 Cattle Company property. The vehicle was partially concealed in trees with its trunk open, according to the incident report. The report said authorities were led through a gate to access the area…
