Faith-based idea for DOC advances in task force

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A governor-appointed task force will encourage the state to pursue a faith-based program in its prison system.

Gov. Larry Rhoden’s Correctional Rehabilitation Task Force voted Wednesday to encourage the state DOC to pursue Burl Cain’s prison seminary model in South Dakota. Later Wednesday, Rhoden said in a news release that he accepted that recommendation.

The Correctional Rehabilitation Task Force was formed by the Governor after the legislature approved a $650 million new men’s prison project in Sioux Falls. One of the task force’s duties is to review and recommend programs and improvements within the system for better rehabilitation and re-entry of inmates.

Republican Sen. Sue Peterson is a member of the task force and also of a subcommittee that is reviewing faith-based programming in the DOC system. Peterson said during Wednesday’s meeting that Cain’s program has proven success…
