Jacksonville Police Engage in Officer-Involved Shooting After Dinsmore Domestic Disturbance

An officer-involved shooting occurred in Jacksonville’s Dinsmore area early today morning. Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey and Chief Alan Parker provided the details, indicating the incident took place on Bradd Avenue off Dunn Avenue, around 3 a.m. The altercation was the result of a domestic disturbance call that had begun hours earlier, around 10 p.m. Monday, as reported by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Corey Sweeney, reportedly engaged in an argument with his mother during which he brandished a knife and threatened her – this information was shared in an official release from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The mother managed to escape the house and Sweeney then locked himself inside. Patrol officers from District 5 arrived on the scene following the mother’s distress call and engaged in a prolonged, four-hour negotiation with Sweeney, who also claimed to possess a shotgun. During the standoff, Sweeney smashed a window, injuring an officer in the process.

As the situation escalated. “Sweeney then tried to come out of the house, holding an object in his hand and rearing back to throw it,” according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office press release. In response, Officers Christopher Bush and Keith Miller discharged their firearms, striking Sweeney.
