Nevada man sentenced for shooting at Bernalillo County deputy

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A Nevada man who fired his gun at a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office deputy learned just how long he will spend behind bars. In 2021, an officer spotted 48-year-old Ryan Dunn speeding down I-40. That’s when Dunn began following Deputy Kathryn Lucero, trying to cut her off several times. Dunn then stopped his car in front of Lucero and fired multiple shots at her. She was not hurt. Dunn soon abandoned his car and made his way back to Las Vegas, where police say he committed several armed robberies.

In court on Wednesday, Deputy Lucero recounted the incident, saying she lived in fear until Dunn was in custody. “I had only been a cop for three years, and was 25 years old at the time. I had enough experience to recognize that Ryan Dunn was trying to bait me into a traffic stop so that he could kill me, all because I wanted him to slow down,” said Lucero.

Dunn also addressed the court, saying he feels remorse for what he did. Ultimately, the judge ruled that he would spend the next six years behind bars, in addition to any time he’s due to serve in Nevada…
