Couple to bring heritage of Guatemalan bakeries to city’s east side

A couple who learned how to bake Guatemalan breads and pastries from relatives is opening a bakery and cafe on the east side of Sioux Falls.

Miguel and Magdalena Jimenez’s La Huehueteca Bakery & Cafe will be in a retail center at 2400 E. Sixth St.

The space is being built out now, with hopes of opening in mid-January or early February, Miguel Jimenez said.

Both of them grew up in Huehuetenango, Guatemala, but they didn’t meet until they had moved to the United States. “Huehueteca” means “the woman from Huehuetenango,” he said.

Jimenez’s grandmother and uncle had bakeries in Guatemala, and he helped his uncle “a little bit.”…
