Flu cases on the rise statewide with more emergency department involvement

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Positive tests of influenza and other flu-related emergency department visits are on the rise across the state.

Early reports on the outlook for this year’s flu season were that it was going to be a rough one, similar to last year, and reports from EMS and the DOH are confirming this to be true.

Flu season beginning to flare up

“We were hitting flu positive tests percent of about 30%,” said Dr. Sarah Kemble. State Epidemiologist of the Department of Health. “That’s as high as we saw test positivity ever last year, and it looks like it might still be going up. So we’re seeing it a bit earlier this year than last year, and we’re seeing more of it.”
