Infant deaths rise in South Carolina, with babies born to Black mothers most affected

(WACH) — Babies born to Black mothers in South Carolina died at more than twice the rate of those born to White mothers in 2023, as the state saw a small but troubling increase in infant deaths, according to new health data.

The infant mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black mothers was 11.7 deaths per 1,000 births, compared with 5.2 for non-Hispanic White mothers.
