OhioHealth to install metal detectors at hospitals by 2026

COLUMBUS, Ohio — OhioHealth is installing metal detectors at public entrances of its hospitals and emergency departments by the start of 2026, expanding weapons-free screening as part of a systemwide effort to prevent workplace violence.

The health system will implement metal detectors along with purse and bag checks at 26 care sites. OhioHealth says the technology will help enforce its long-standing weapons-free policy at a time when violence against health care workers is on the rise.

“The safety of our patients, visitors and associates is of utmost importance to us at OhioHealth,” said Todd Wickerham, Vice President of Security and Protective Services. “While we have always prohibited weapons from entering our care sites, this is an active measure to make sure that’s the case.”…
