Man accused of providing weapon that injured Evansville Officer charged federally

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The man accused of providing Jailani Chew with the firearm that seriously injured Evansville Police Officer Sam Taylor is now facing federal charges relating to the case.

Maurice Cobb is facing two counts of making a false statement with the acquisition of a firearm, receipt of a firearm while under indictment for a felony and possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Cobb reportedly claimed he was not under felony indictment on the paperwork to purchase the firearm, despite being under indictment for neglect of a dependent in Perry County.

Suspect in EPD officer shooting seeks change of venue

Authorities say Cobb admitted that he gave one of his weapons to Chew after learning that the teenager had been in an altercation, and said he thought Chew needed the weapon more than him. During the investigation into the shooting of Officer Sam Taylor, it was determined the gun fired by Chew was the same one provided by Cobb.

According to court documents, Cobb now faces fines up to $250,000 for each fine…
